Return of the Swallows & Fiesta de las Golondrinas

The cliff swallows of Mission San Juan Capistrano are the most famous birds in California, and their spring return is celebrated with one of the longest-running festivals in the American West. Fiesta week culminates in the Swallows Day Parade — one of the largest non-motorized parades in the country — with horses, floats, mariachi, Native dance, and thousands of townspeople lining Camino Capistrano in their finest western wear. The tradition, first celebrated in the 1930s, is San Juan Capistrano's beating cultural pulse. Plan a March trip around it at least once; you'll never forget it.
